CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Raidou Kuzunoha the XIV
AGE: ~18 ・ canon is never clear
CANON: Devil Summoner

CANON HISTORY: Soulless ArmyKing AbaddonFanbook Character SheetCharacter wiki
CANON PERSONALITY:
Although Raidou Kuzunoha the XIV is a silent protagonist of the Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha games, multiple sources help shape an actual character. The dialogue choices the players are given, the actions that he takes in the games, supplementary information in the prequel novel and official fanbook, and the official manga released by Atlus all lead to a very concise and definite personality for Raidou.

Before Raidou Kuzunoha the XIV was known as the protector of the Capital, he was originally known as a young boy named Jouhei who grew up in the secluded Kuzunoha village. Raised to become a powerful devil summoner and the next Raidou Kuzunoha, Jouhei was separated from his peers in order to focus on his training. As a result, he grew up isolated from the outside world and had very little people to actually speak with. With no one to share his feelings or thoughts with, he grew up as a very quiet child and had a tendency to only speak when spoken to, being unaccustomed to speaking his mind. This trait would stay with him even as he grew older and is the explanation as to why he's as quiet as he is in the series. Although his silent demeanour in the games could be excused by Raidou's position as a silent protagonist, multiple characters throughout the two games comment on how quiet he is and how he's a man of few words. Even in the manga, it is rare for him to speak and he would sometimes go through entire chapters saying nothing more than a few lines.

Furthermore, this lack of socialization in his childhood made him stilted and almost awkward in his interactions with others. By rarely speaking, he often engages in only one-sided conversations in which he would only listen while the other party practically talks to themselves. When he's surrounded by his classmates who are excited to see him at school, he doesn't react and doesn't even greet them back. When he does speak, he's blunt and straightforward, not saying more than needed and doesn't mince his words when needed. He's not afraid of calling people out, especially with his peers, and quite pointedly tell them if they're being a nuisance or if they're needlessly putting people in danger. As a result, he gets called "cold" by others.

Added to Raidou's quietness, he's rather flat with his emotions, which only adds to this "cold" persona he holds. It's not so much that Raidou lacks emotions but rather that he suppresses them or keeps them hidden. He displays sorrow when he's forced to kill a mother in front of her daughter and he's proud when Nagi passes her test to become Geirin Kuzunoha the XVIII, but in most case scenarios, he keeps on a straight face. It could be argued that his childhood played a part in his difficulty or reluctance to express himself, but the manga seems to imply that he keeps his emotions shielded because of his duties. As the protector of the Capital and holder of the Raidou Kuzunoha title, he is forced to make difficult decisions and even kill those he may not want to harm. His mentor and overseer, Gouto, even tells him that "as the Capital's protector, [he] must heartless" and that he must cast aside his personal feelings to fulfil his duty. As a result, this is most likely the reason as to why Raidou doesn't wear his emotions on his sleeve and keeps them hidden.

Despite his best efforts though, Raidou does have a soft side to him that is unfitting of his title. This could be exemplified most clearly with the incident involving Kinsui and her mother, Namiko. Despite that Namiko has turned into a demon and had killed multiple men in the city, Raidou hesitated to kill her in front of her daughter and when he did, he showed remorse for it. He wasn't able to sleep properly that night and even went out of his way the next day to check up on Kinsui, though he couldn't reveal to her what truly happened. In another example, when Raidou was tasked with protecting the Kukuri Princess, Kushinada, and keeping her indoors at all times, he negotiated a deal with her that he would take her out only if he accompanied her. This softness is, unfortunately, one of his weaknesses as a true devil summoner and something that he struggles with in the manga.

He's also still young. Canon never specifies his actual age but he's still in his late teens and it sometimes shows. He absolutely loves eating daigaku-imo and even brings it up when his canon alternate universe counterpart, Raido Kuzunoha the XIV, suggests for him to visit his world again and even sings with some of the kids in Tsukigata village when they prompt him to. He finds great joy in being able to knock an android version of Rasputin out with a bottle of wine over the head and, despite knowing that Gouto isn't a real cat but rather Raidou Kuzunoha the I trapped in the body of him, he often uses foxtails on Gouto to make him give into his cat instincts. These instances of when Raidou actually shows his age are very rare and can only be counted a few times, but when they do happen, it does show that there are more sides to him rather than just being cold and solely a devil summoner.

However, Raidou's unwavering loyalty to his duty and his self-sacrificial approach to it means that he is willing to give up all these individualistic traits about himself if he needs to. To become a Raidou Kuzunoha means to discard your identity and individuality to become solely Raidou Kuzunoha. It's to erase whoever Jouhei was and he did this willingly. He has chosen to not engage in any romantic relationships either and for his Kuzunoha duties, he would give up everything. He would even disobey certain orders if he believes that it interferes with his overall duty to protect the Capital. This desire to protect the Capital becomes his driving force behind nearly everything he does and even if it means cutting down his successor from the far future, Raidou Kuzunoha the XL, then he will do it.

Raidou is essentially a near perfect devil summoner and Raidou Kuzunoha. While he's still young and has troubles completely suppressing his softer sides and tendencies associated with his age, he shows an unbelievable amount of dedication to his cause. He is a man who will stop at nothing to fulfil his duty, even if that means to give up his own interests and desires, and he is extremely loyal to the cause. He is remarked by Gouto as possibly being the best successor he's had so far for both his abilities and dedication, but as a result of this duty, Raidou is a very lonely and quiet person. He grew up with nothing but this goal in mind and he continues to isolate himself to focus solely on his job. He is told to suppress his emotions and being part of the Kuzunoha clan essentially strips him of what makes him human. It's a soul-crushing and depressing life, but he chooses this path willingly and chooses to sacrifice himself to the Capital. Even if that means that Jouhei can't have a proper life and must be replaced with the will of Raidou Kuzunoha.

After all, that's what being a Raidou Kuzunoha is about.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Physical: As the protector of the Capital, it is expected of Raidou to be in peak physical conditions. Undergoing the gruelling training at the Kuzunoha Village, he is able to take down demons even without the help of his own and also take a beating if he needs to.

Weaponary: Armed with a katana and a gun, he is highly skilled at using both. Asides from his demons, they are his primary weapons and as a result, he is very familiar with the upkeeping of both. He can also infuse his bullets or sword with an elemental effect with the help of his demons.

Demon Storing: With the help of his summoning tubes (Kudas), Raidou is able to carry up to 20 demons at a time. These Kudas can be found tucked away into the holsters strapped to his chest, but it's revealed in the manga that he also has holsters on his ankles.

Devil Summoning: As fitting of a Devil Summoner, Raidou has the ability to summon demons after storing them in his Kudas. This summoning process takes the summoner's energy (Magnitite or MAG for short) and constantly feeds off it while in battle so the more powerful the demon is or the longer it is out, it will use up more MAG. Typically, summoners can only summon one demon at a time due to the difficulty in controlling multiple at the same time and a lack of MAG to sustain them, but Raidou is able to regularly summon two at a time with ease. He has mastered the art of summoning and near the end of the manga, it is revealed that he could even summon up to eight demons if he has a large source of MAG to do so.

Demon sense: Demons are generally invisible to normal humans and can only be seen those who have trained their spiritual powers (related to MAG and how much one could use) such as devil summoners. Some demons, however, can take on forms that are visible to normal humans such as another human being or an animal, but without any spiritual training, normal humans cannot notice anything different about them or even understand them. The most common example of this is with Gouto, the first Raidou Kuzunoha who has taken the form of a cat and can speak. To Raidou and other trained summoners, they can understand what he is saying but to others, it just comes out as meows. This also applies to Kushinada's Nekomata who normally takes the form of a housecat but Raidou and Gouto were instantly able to recognize that she was a demon from their first meeting. As Raidou is an extremely trained and skilled devil summoner, he is able to both communicate with and sense demons with little effort.

Demon Investigation Skills: By possessing the right demons, Raidou is able to have abilities such as shapeshifting or even reading minds. While there are some skills that strictly for gameplay mechanics such as decreasing or increasing enemy encounter rates, some abilities can affect other characters and they will be noted and explained in the following points:
      Cool Down
      ➟ Calms down a person's emotions

      Ignite
➟ Livens a person and fills them with energy to talk, especially talk about things they're trying to hide

      Read Mind
➟ Allows Raidou to read the mind of whoever he's using this skill on

      Transform
➟ As long as he has a bit of their hair, Raidou can transform into different forms whether it's another human being (or a demon masquerading themselves as a human) or animal.
CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Jouhei Kurosawa
AU AGE: 23
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Jouhei loses the pointy side bangs and his eye colour is changed to brown but asides from that, he looks the same.

AU HISTORY:
  • Jouhei was born in Japan as an only child to his parents. Due to his father's job as a black market smuggler (working with his brother and Jouhei's uncle/Nanashi's father), Jouhei and his mother were able to have relatively easy lives without having to worry about money. However, when Jouhei was three, his mother unexpectedly passed away and his father decided that he no longer wanted to deal in such a dangerous business. He took his son and moved to the United States to then separate himself from his old life and from his brother, who continued to smuggle illegal weapons in the country.

  • For the next five years, Jouhei grew up peacefully with his father in suburban Californa. Due to his young age, he was able to get accustomed to his new American life easily and was able to pick up the language with ease. He was even able to make friends and live seemingly a normal life. However, his father then suddenly passed away when Jouhei was eight and Jouhei was relocated once more to live with his parental grandparents.

  • His grandparents lived on a rural farm and although Jouhei still went to school in the nearby community, he became extremely closed off from others and would hardly speak unless he was spoken to. Spending most of his time on a farm where he only had his grandparents to speak with didn't help either so thus, Jouhei spent the rest of his childhood as a very quiet and self-reserved boy.

  • Jouhei then spent the next ten years living and working on his grandparents' farm until he finished high school. He had the option of staying at the farm to continue working but he chose to head into the city instead where he would attend a post-secondary education and head to veterinary school.

  • With the support of his grandparents, Jouhei moved to Recolle where he attended Recolle University to do his undergraduate program. Once he finished at the age of 22, he then applied and got accepted into veterinary school, focusing on a mixed-animal course of study (working with both household and farm animals). At the same time, Jouhei got a job as a veterinary assistant at a local vet clinic in order to bring in some extra money and to help with his education.

  • Currently, Jouhei is completing his first year of veterinary school and living a boring but very peaceful life.

❖ Nanashi Kurosawa ([personal profile] reaquila): Jouhei's cousin and the son of Jouhei's parental uncle who ran the smuggling business with his father. Due to the eight-year age gap between the two and because Jouhei was separated from the smuggling side of the family, the two never interacted until Nanashi was relocated to Recolle. With the insistence of his grandparents ("family is family," they've said), Jouhei sought out Nanashi when he arrived in the city and has been watching over him since. Although this was originally at the request of his grandparents, Jouhei has become fond of his cousin and now takes care of him by his own choice. He attempts to play the role of an older brother and ensures that Nanashi is doing well in school, eating properly, not getting involved in shady business, and all other sorts of things. He also occasionally pinches Nanashi's cheek whenever he's misbehaving or being a little shit.

❖ Shin Asuka ([personal profile] impulsives): Jouhei's childhood friend in California before the death of his father. Despite that Shin was three years younger, the two often played with each other in the final two years before Jouhei moved away. After Jouhei left, the two kept in contact with one another through handwritten letters but eventually lost contact over the years.

❖ Minato Arisato ([personal profile] compendiem): An intern at the same veterinary clinic that Jouhei works at and who occasionally shadows him. They don't speak much to each other ("what happens if you put two Megaten silent protags together") but they seem to get along just fine. Probably because Jouhei carries around an unlimited supply of candy and Minato loves free food.

❖ Clover Geteilt ([personal profile] servileness): Also shadows Jouhei at the veterinary clinic. She bribes him with candies because she's just "thoughtful" that way. Jouhei is quite okay with this and gives her pointers about getting into veterinary school in exchange.

❖ Elliot Craig ([personal profile] fiddlestick): Someone who knew vaguely Jouhei during his farming days. Elliot's grandparents had a farm nearby and shared the same nearby community as Jouehi's grandparents so whenever Elliot came to visit during the holidays or summers, the two ran into each other now and then. Just kind of knew each other as "oh that dude with the hat" and "oh that person who complimented my hat".

Note: Permission to include the above characters in this AU have been given by their respective players.
AU PERSONALITY:
  • While Jouhei is nearly as quiet as his canon counterpart, it comes from a different place. Raidou was quiet due to growing up completely isolated from others while Jouhei is quiet due to the trauma of his father unexpectedly dying and then being uprooted. While Jouhei is also isolated in this AU by growing up on a rural farm, he also had to deal with suddenly losing his old life and friends within days. It caused him to become closed off to others and having no one to really speak to asides from his grandparents (who only spoke Japanese) and the kids whenever he went to school didn't help either.

  • Unlike Raidou who sacrificed everything for his duty of protecting the Capital, Jouhei does not share the same responsibilities in the AU. He did not have to give up his identity and interests for the greater good unlike Raidou and in fact, he's able to indulge in his desires in the AU. He was able to pursue his interests in going to veterinary school in Recolle and to practically do whatever he pleases without having to sacrifice his individuality. As a result, he's more selfish in this AU in doing what he wants (but that might not be saying much since Raidou was solely self-sacrificial in canon).

  • Jouhei puts himself out there more than Raidou does. He makes sure to keep in contact with others (mostly Nanashi, though) to ensure that they're all right and actually makes an effort to try and speak to them. He's more self-aware that he's not very talkative and that conversations could come to an end so he is more willing to actually speak and react to things. He doesn't easily ignore things like Raidou and is probably a better conversation than Raidou was... probably. Jouhei still likes staying quiet if he can help it.

  • Unlike Raidou who suppressed his emotions as part of being a devil summoner, Jouhei is more swayed by his feelings and shows them more frequently. He doesn't like causing a scene and he's not one to overreact but he'd be more willing to act on his emotions. If he's frustrated or angry, he won't swallow them down but rather do something about it. If he doesn't feel uncomfortable with a scenario, he may remove himself from the situation. He certainly wouldn't kill someone's mother out of his duty and discard his emotions, that's for sure.

  • Since Jouhei actually attends school for real and isn't just going as a front like Raidou, he's actually quite studious and takes school rather serious. He hardly misses a class (unlike Raidou who skipped most of the time due to devil summoning) and is the perfect student, getting good grades and not being disruptive. It actually gets to a point where if Nanashi is slacking off in school, Jouhei will lecture him about it and ensure that he's not falling asleep during classes.
